Stagecoach expands UK budget coach network

Stagecoach Group today (21 August 2009) announced the expansion of its market-leading services.

The new, improved timetable will see the introduction of new services and new vehicles on the popular budget inter-city coach network, as well as improved frequency and capacity. was launched in the UK in 2003 and revolutionised coach travel by offering fares from just £1 via a simple online booking system. More than 2million passengers now use services in the UK every year.

Due to growing demand, the company today launched a brand new cross country service between Cardiff and Newcastle, via Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. The new route will ensure passengers are better connected through the network than ever before.

Stagecoach has invested almost £4 million in a fleet of new vehicles to provide improved capacity and comfort on journeys from London to Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool and Cheltenham, as well as on cross country journeys between Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester, Oxford, Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

The new state-of-the-art vehicles include 11 Plaxton Volvo inter-urban coaches and four Van Hool Astromega double deck coaches.

In response to passenger demand, frequency is also being increased on the following routes:

  • Leeds-London
  • Cardiff-London
  • Portsmouth-Leeds

Within the new timetable, has also committed to run services on Christmas Day and New Year's Day when passengers will be able to travel between London and Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Coventry, Cardiff, Newport, Bristol, Swindon and Reading.

The new timetable comes into effect on 5 October, although passengers can start booking advance journeys from today. was launched in the UK in 2003 and currently carries over 2 million passengers a year, covering around 40 locations. In the US, now links 30 cities across the Midwest and Northeast and has carried 3million passengers since its launch in 2006. One million of those customers have used the service in the past six months alone.

Earlier this month, Stagecoach launched services in Canada, offering passengers low budget travel between Toronto, Kingston and Montreal.
